We have been doing summer school in our house for about a month now. If you are anything like me, you might like knowing what curriculum other people are using. I always find it fun to learn about what other people are using, especially to see if there are any great resources I haven't heard of yet.
So, here it goes. My 6, almost 7 year old, for summer school is doing 4 days a week:
1 page of I Can Write Manuscript by Christian Light Publications. I especially like this handwriting book because it moves at a great pace. After general handwriting review, it moves to copy work of sentences about animals, and then the last 10 pages or so are short poems about virtues.
1/2 a lesson of Rod and Staff Math Level 2. Well, it is summer after all. I will move him back up to a full lesson when we start "real school" again. On the other hand, I can't imagine him being ready for Level 3 before he turns 8, so I could technically keep going with the half lessons....TBD.
1 page of Building Thinking Skills Level 1 by Critical Thinking Press (a page of his choice...)
1 page front and back of Plaid Phonics Level B
As of June 27, I also added in the second half of the 2nd Nature Reader by Christian Liberty Press. My son has been very fixated on legos this past week and hasn't been doing as much of his own reading lately, so this will ensure that he is reading and getting back in the habit of answering questions about reading out loud.
For summer school, my rising 7th grader is doing:
A lesson of Christian Light Education (CLE) Math. CLE has a 2 year pre-algebra program and I am trying to time things so he can start Algebra by 8th grade. Sometimes I hear CLE get criticized for all of the practical math in their pre-algebra program, but after going through it, I have to say I am glad my son is using it. Some of the concepts in this level, I didn't learn until I was earning my MBA in Finance. (Obviously, when I was in that program I was in a different life stage with different goals than I have now!)
Writing lessons from Rod and Staff English 7. I love, love, love the writing lessons in Rod and Staff. They are so clear and get great results. Unfortunately, my son enjoys Christian Light Education (CLE) Language Arts much more. Doing it this way, we are both getting our way. We are doing the Rod and Staff writing lessons over the summer, and CLE during the school year. I recently found out that his Catholic Schoolhouse program will include IEW writing, so I think that may cover any supplementing that I need to do!
Pentime Cursive 6 - During the summer, I like for my son to continue practicing cursive, but I don't require this during the school year.
When we have time, he is finishing up some workbook by Critical Thinking Press that we had left in the school closet!
Well, that's what we are doing for summer school here! What are you doing at your house?
